Fix Your Wi-Fi: Why Router Placement Beats a Faster Internet Plan
The most common response to bad home Wi-Fi is to call the internet provider and buy a faster plan. It is also the least effective, because in most homes the bottleneck is not the speed coming into the house — it is what happens to the signal after it leaves a router shoved behind the TV in a corner of the basement. Work through this list in order; most people fix their problem before spending a dollar.
Step 1: Move the Router (Seriously, This Is Most of It)
Wi-Fi radiates outward from the router in all directions and weakens with every wall, floor, and large object it passes through. The ideal placement:
- Central in the home — a router in a far corner wastes half its coverage on your driveway.
- Elevated — on a shelf or furniture, not the floor. Signal spreads better from height.
- In the open — not inside a cabinet, not behind the TV, not in a closet with the vacuum.
- Away from interference — microwaves, baby monitors, cordless phones, and large metal objects (refrigerators, mirrors, fish tanks) all degrade signal. Give it a few feet of clearance.
- Antennas positioned, if it has them — for multi-antenna routers, angling one vertical and one horizontal covers devices in different orientations and on different floors.
If the cable enters your house in a terrible spot, a longer ethernet run to relocate the router is one of the highest-value cables you will ever buy.
Step 2: Restart and Update
Routers are small computers that run for months without a break, and they accumulate the same cruft any computer does. Reboot the router and modem when things get weird — and check the router’s admin app or page for firmware updates, which carry real performance and security fixes. If your router is many years old, its firmware may have stopped receiving updates entirely, which is a replacement signal in itself.
Step 3: Use the Right Band
Modern routers broadcast at least two bands, and they trade off against each other: 2.4 GHz travels farther but slower and is far more congested (it shares airspace with your neighbors’ networks and half the gadgets in your house), while 5 GHz — and 6 GHz on newer routers — is much faster but shorter-range. Devices near the router should live on the faster band; distant, low-demand devices (smart plugs, the printer) belong on 2.4 GHz. Most modern routers manage this automatically with “band steering,” but if yours broadcasts separate network names, connect deliberately.
Step 4: Wire What Doesn’t Move
Every stationary, high-demand device you plug into ethernet — the TV, game console, desktop, streaming box — gets a faster, more stable connection and frees up airtime for everything that must stay wireless. Wi-Fi is a shared medium; the less it carries, the better it carries it.
Step 5: Know When It’s the Hardware
If your router came free from your provider years ago, or predates Wi-Fi 6, replacement is often transformative — newer standards handle many simultaneous devices far better, which is the real shape of modern home demand. For larger or multi-floor homes with genuine dead zones, a mesh system (two or three units spread through the house) beats a single powerful router and beats plug-in “extenders,” which typically halve speeds and create janky separate networks. Renting a modem/router combo from your ISP? Buying your own usually pays for itself within a year or two of skipped rental fees.
Step 6: Test Like an Engineer (a Lazy One)
Run a speed test standing next to the router, then again in the problem room. If the number next to the router matches what you pay for but collapses in the bedroom, it is a coverage problem — placement or mesh. If it is slow even beside the router on a wired connection, the issue is the plan or the provider, and that is when the upgrade call is justified. Diagnose first; pay second.
An afternoon of free fixes — placement, restart, firmware, band hygiene, a couple of ethernet cables — solves the majority of household Wi-Fi complaints. The fastest internet plan in the world cannot outrun a router in a basement cabinet.
